Broilers are bred to put on meat fast and reach table weight in around six weeks. Layers are bred to produce eggs and are much lighter birds that start laying at about eighteen to twenty weeks and keep going for a year or more. They are different animals with different feed, housing and economics, and you choose one based on whether you want a quick meat cycle or steady egg income.
