A chick guard is a low ring of cardboard or hardboard that keeps newly arrived chicks in a circle around the heat and feed instead of wandering into cold corners. It is cheap, takes minutes to set up, and prevents a classic first-night loss where chicks pile in a corner and smother. Widen it as they grow and remove it after the first week or so.
