They forage for a good part of their diet, taking insects, seeds and greens, which is exactly why they cost less to keep. That said, foraging alone does not carry chicks through the first weeks, so brood them on proper starter feed and let them range once they are feathered. Supplementing in the dry season keeps them growing when there is little to find.
