Why a short journey matters
A newly hatched chick lives off the yolk sac it absorbed at hatching. This lasts a day or two without feed. That is why chicks can be moved at all.
But it is a buffer, not a free pass.
Travel stress is one of the biggest causes of first-week deaths. Every extra hour in a box is an hour the chick is not eating, drinking or being kept warm.
A chick going from Gweru to Zvishavane has a much easier trip than one coming down from Harare. You see that difference in your losses, not on the invoice.
How chicks travel
Chicks travel in ventilated boxes with dividers inside.
The dividers are not for neatness. They stop birds sliding into one corner and smothering each other when the vehicle turns.
Boxes ride in the cab or a ventilated load area. Never a closed boot. On a Midlands run the danger is heat, not cold.
Sending chicks by bus
People ask about this often. The honest answer: it is the riskiest way to move chicks.
Nobody on the bus is watching the box for heat or crushing. Delays happen. Most sellers will not stand behind chicks sent this way.
We would rather arrange a delivery or a collection than take money for a batch we expect to arrive in poor condition.
Receiving your batch
Have the brooder warm before the vehicle arrives. This is the most common mistake on delivery day.
When the box opens:
- Move the chicks under the heat straight away.
- Dip each chick’s beak in the drinker as you take it out.
- Give water for the first hour before you put feed down.
- Watch them for an hour.
Chicks arriving after a journey are a little dehydrated. A chick that fills up on dry crumbs before drinking will struggle.
Read the chicks
That first hour of watching is worth more than any thermometer.
- Spread out and moving — comfortable
- Piled tight under the heat — too cold
- Against the walls, panting — too hot
- All crowded to one side — a draught from that direction

Delivery charges
Charges depend on the route and the order size. A bigger order carries the cost better, because the run costs the same either way.
Ask for a delivered price, not a chick price. That is the only fair way to compare us against a Harare supplier.
Count on arrival
Count the birds while the driver is there. Raise any problem the same day, not the next day.
